Summary: The first shipment of recruits into the new Jaeger Academy program arrive. Some are staggered throughout the month, but they all have the same basic greeting. Here you are, there's where you sleep, here's what you wear, get going.

The Shatterdome didn't look futuristic, swatches of metal and concrete transforming a portion of the harbor into five enormous bays. Nevermind that only two were currently in use. The stark greys stand out against the colorful face of the city, a hulking monolith that's been carved into the face of the city that had once upon a century been termed the Jewel of the Pacific.

He looked down his list, checking off in a column and making a brief note as he did so. "Glad to have you aboard, Cadet Bishop. Captain Zhang should be along in twenty. At your ease to the left of the door until then."

His tone didn't appear hurried, for all he was technically ushering her off. Lt. Contreras was taking his task seriously, keeping an eye out for the interactions of the younger subset of cadets. If he was going to be living with them, he might as well start figuring them out early as he could. Teenagers. What had he done to get signed up for that duty?

With no one else immediately behind Kate (most having checked in already), it was her call to stay or go as she pleased.

She can respect a guy who does his job properly. Even if it seems as menial as checking off the new recruits and waving them off to their new rooms for the coming months. There had to be more to it then that though.

And well, this guy's done checking people in, so it's not like she'd be disturbing him from his job if she chatted with him. "So what are your duties, sir?" It's strange calling people that, but rules are rules. And it's not like it's particularly difficult to follow that one.

He was looking down the list once again, glancing up when Kate addressed him properly. They were a relatively lax organization compared to military groups within individual countries. Focusing on doing their duties well and in a timely matter came before most else, and Contreras liked where he fitted in toward the less responsible end of things. He was an organizer, and someone who listened to orders and followed through as was needed.

"As pertains to you and yours, cadet?"

Well she was thinking more in general, but when it come down to it. His responsibilities with the cadets is really all that matters to her. Though it does seem like he has other things he's responsible for.

"Yes, sir." If that's the information he's willing to share, she's willing to take it.

"I'm your alarm clock, your warning bell, your shower call, your chow-time triangle, and your light's out call. I'm also the one who does less yelling."

Which he stated absolutely deadpan, fighting back a twitch of his lips into a grin. He was trying to be as serious as the situation merited, for the same of giving the right impression straight off the bat.

"A word to the wise, cadet. Don't stop saluting your superior officers until they tell you otherwise."

She nods, she'll have to keep that in mind. "Thanks for the tip. Sir." Honestly, she means it. Yelling she can deal with, but she'd rather avoid it. It's also strange to address people as sir, but at least she remembers, even if she does have to tack it on.

Though this guy seems a lot less harsh than he's trying to seem. Trying to scare the new recruits, probably.

Diego will be a fun man to know outside of the rough three month Academy entrance. His lips twitch up in another hint of a smile, clipboard tucking under one arm as he glances off after the other cadets. "Captain Zhang and I will be staying with the cadets under eighteen. She takes her assignments seriously."

Another tiny nugget of information, for what it was worth.

What's three months? She'll tough it out, besides, everybody who's here has probably gone through the same rough three months. She's pretty sure it's supposed to build a sense of camaraderie or something along those lines. He seems like the kind of guy she'd like to know.

"Good to know. Does she have any other assignments?" Just how often is she going to be seeing these guys if they're technically assigned to the under eighteen crowd?

"At the moment, the Cadets are her primary responsibility." Diego felt himself be amused at that reality, knowing how seriously she took her work. "Not that she'll be holding hands. You won't see her around the whole time, but I don't suggest slacking off just because you think she's out of sight."

She makes a face in response. "Like I would slack off now?" As if. She's spent so long trying to get in here. Ruining her chances would be incredibly dumb.
