Summary: The first shipment of recruits into the new Jaeger Academy program arrive. Some are staggered throughout the month, but they all have the same basic greeting. Here you are, there's where you sleep, here's what you wear, get going.

The Shatterdome didn't look futuristic, swatches of metal and concrete transforming a portion of the harbor into five enormous bays. Nevermind that only two were currently in use. The stark greys stand out against the colorful face of the city, a hulking monolith that's been carved into the face of the city that had once upon a century been termed the Jewel of the Pacific.

Okay...well that's kind of weird. Or maybe it's not that weird, and it just sounds weird to a guy like Yancy. He remembers how intimidated Raleigh had been when they first arrived at the Academy, actually. The rest of those guys had been way more intense and prepared. "Hmm." He says, thoughtfully. Hopefully this young lady fares a little better than those cadets had.

"If you want to see it, make the time one day." He suggests, unknowingly echoing Kate's earlier thoughts. Shanghai might not always be there to see, or at least not in any sort of shape for receiving tourists. The way things are in this war, you never know what won't be there anymore down the line.

Intimidated isn't in her vocabulary, though awkward and knocked off balance are. But she's here and she plans to stay. Once she's set her sights on something, Kate'll do everything in her power to get it. Hopefully she'll find somebody on that same wavelength that she's comfortable with. But those tests aren't about to happen for months, plenty of time to bond.

"Never know what might happen to it." Considering the state of things, and its location it could always be the next target. Grim, but true. "I'll have to see what happens," her next months will be much busier.

Yancy is used to having his thoughts echoes out loud by someone, but usually that someone is Raleigh. Drift burn runs hot with them, so it's often weeks after a good drift before they stop finishing each others' sentences or passing the salt unasked and all of the other silly things that go along with having someone else so intimately inside of your head.

He smiles a little, though it's a rueful smile. She's not wrong. There's not a lot you can count on with absolute certainty these days. "It's not so bad after the first 90 days."

"I'll have to take your word for it. I'm just getting started." Though it does sound like the first three months will be the hardest. After that they'll at least get their stuff back, probably some ability to do other things as well. Like decide if they really want to be a Ranger and picking alternate career paths.

He's good for his word, of course, but he wouldn't expect someone he just met to know that. So Yancy nods instead, and tries to think about what advice he could've used himself when he was just getting started. "This is just a bridge. Once you cross it, the world opens up. Your whole life's going to change soon." If she stays in line and does the work, that is. But that's implied.

She nods. That's all pretty obvious. It might be a tough bridge, but she's already committed herself to this path. Whatever they're going to throw her way, she'll do. She's not quite sure what else to say.

No need to go on about it when they've exhausted the topic. Yancy gives the cadet one last friendly nod and goes back to his paperwork. She's free to stick around if she likes, but he's not one to keep people standing around for no reason, either.
