[ open ] Welcome to Chile, Cadets.

Characters: ALL.
Location: Valparaíso Shatterdome, Chile.
Date/Time: February 15th-28th.
Summary: The first shipment of recruits into the new Jaeger Academy program arrive. Some are staggered throughout the month, but they all have the same basic greeting. Here you are, there's where you sleep, here's what you wear, get going.
Additional Notes: See here for additional information. For information on the current weather, check out this link.

The Shatterdome didn't look futuristic, swatches of metal and concrete transforming a portion of the harbor into five enormous bays. Nevermind that only two were currently in use. The stark greys stand out against the colorful face of the city, a hulking monolith that's been carved into the face of the city that had once upon a century been termed the Jewel of the Pacific.

Note: Players are welcome to start their own interactions outside of the three main prompted scenarios. Go wild!

Mike couldn't help a smile. "Y'know, they say that the fastest way to reset your clock is to eat protein for breakfast, unless something else has come out since I read that."

"That so?" Considering Yancy has been doing coffee and then something toast like or mushy to soak up the nausea the stuff that goes for coffee around here creates, he hasn't given much protein a shot yet in the morning. He'll have to give it a try. "Good to know."

"It's worth a try, sir," he said as he tipped his face up toward the sun, eyes closing. "Might help with the coffee sludge situation a little bit, anyway. Since you can't count on adrenaline every time you wake up."

Kaiju didn't really come at thoughtful moments, after all.

That's what little brothers are for, Yancy thinks. He doesn't voice it, though. Best not to paint a competent pilot in the light of someone's baby brother, true or not. But the protein thing? Hey, he'll give it a try. Either it works or it doesn't, and it'd be difficult to make things worse. Besides, he's not a cadet, so these kids have no reason to play pranks on him. It would be stupid.

Ballsy, but definitely not advisable. The thought amuses him anyway. Some good guys had been tossed right out on their rear for less, but the PPDC had to be hard asses about that stuff. It was life or death in the cockpit, no room for fucking around. "Gonna have to. Soda crash isn't worth it."

"Can't hurt, anyway." Protein for breakfast was protein for breakfast. It wasn't like it was a prescription for squid ink mixed with milk of magnesia or something, so there wasn't really any possibility of it being a prank - just something that Mike honestly hoped worked.

Too bad he couldn't remember where he'd read it from.

"I've been mostly decaf since Alaska, anyway."

Yancy grunts in response to that. Decaf? No thanks. He'll figure out an answer that contains caffeine, thanks. He gets to his feet and shrugs again, dusting his pants off. "Maybe there's a Caribou around here somewhere."

"I wish you luck. You'll have to tell us what the town's like once you have the chance to look around." Mike grinned mischievously. "Seems like most of us won't have the time to explore."

"Some of your Sundays will be free," Yancy answers, with a wink. Not this Sunday, but that's still under wraps until the brass feel like announcing it.

He laughed, stretching his arms up over his head. "Yeah, some. Let's hope it's not too many or I might end up with my ass in the brig. Might forget that my job title's changed if I find a night club or something."

"You'd get back to Nevada sooner." Yancy mused. He knew a thing or two about making stupid decisions himself from his own Academy days. Of course, the real trouble was that they were apt to toss troublemakers out of the program. He'd almost found that out the hard way. But this kid probably knew it. On a second chance already, they'd have gone over everything with him to make sure he made the best of his time there. Luckily, there weren't any rules against kidding around.

"Yeah, but if I wanted to be in Nevada, I wouldn't have come back. Ever since Trespasser wandered his fat ass into the San Francisco bay, I've wanted to kick the kaiju back down the drain they crawled out of." He shrugged one shoulder, though. "Only problem was that I couldn't find anyone I was compatible with and I wasn't ready to freeze my rear off in Alaska until I was assigned somewhere else."

Thus, he'd gone to Vegas, gotten a place of his own, a job or two, but it had sat ill with him the whole time. He had dreams of fighting, literal dreams, like memories, and that meant he needed to head back to PPDC territory, where he was now.

It was good to hear. Not that Yancy assumed the cadet was here for laughs in the first place -anyone who'd already jumped the hoops once before knew it wasn't anything to take lightly. But it was always good to hear some fire in them anyway. Any one of those cadets could be along on a mission soon. It was good if they had their heart in the game. Maybe this one just needed to work on his head.

"I read your file." Not that he's actually supposed to tell them that, but no one expressly forbid it anyway. As soon as the kid saw him in a classroom he'd probably have guessed as much anyway. "Ranger Martin takes point with those matters. Talk about it if you want, but I'm not making any official requests. Alright?" Yancy was active duty. If the kid was cleared, he was cleared. Nobody would be questioning that.

Mike shrugged. "It's not like there's much more to say." From what he remembered his time in Alaska was pretty normal. Just the memories and dreams sometimes made things strange -- strange enough that he had to make himself remember that it had been perfectly normal.

Better not to think about it.

"Probably should've taken a security job or something. I would've at least stayed in the loop that way."

"It's a tough job." Security, that is. The comment isn't meant in a dissuasive way. Who knows, maybe this Cadet would be great at it? He's got the background, apparently. The spirit of it, at any rate, is appreciative. A lot of effort goes into making sure the whole operation runs as smoothly as possible.

"Can't be worse than bouncing some Vegas nightclubs," he answered with a laugh. "I'd like to think that people in the PPDC have more self control than a bunch of drunk, dancing idiots."

[personal profile] inurhead 2014-03-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"On a good day." He agreed, thinking of a few times he'd seen PPDC staff get a little out of hand themselves. But it was mostly a joke. Really.

[personal profile] secondtry 2014-03-06 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
The comment had Mike grinning. "Let's hope. I mean, we're supposed to be the best the world can offer." But then, 'supposed to be' and 'are' were two different things.

"Humanity's greatest hope." Yancy agreed, though even with the parroted propaganda, there's still something in his eyes that says he loves his job.

"Yet another reason to come back," Mike muttered, amused. "I didn't want to see any more propaganda commercials."

It gets to the point where you tune them out anyway, doesn't it? Yancy starts to respond, but his phone buzzes in his pocket and interrupts his thoughts. He sees that it's a call from Andrea and hopes fervently that there isn't more paperwork waiting for him somewhere.

"Don't take it too easy, Cadet." He says, but the nod and smile as he hits the button to take the call probably mean he's not all that serious. Duty calls. Sometimes literally.

"I know the routine, sir," Mike answered with a smile of his own, lifting a hand in a wave before he laid down again to enjoy the sunlight. So much better than Alaska.
