[ open ] Welcome to Chile, Cadets.

Characters: ALL.
Location: Valparaíso Shatterdome, Chile.
Date/Time: February 15th-28th.
Summary: The first shipment of recruits into the new Jaeger Academy program arrive. Some are staggered throughout the month, but they all have the same basic greeting. Here you are, there's where you sleep, here's what you wear, get going.
Additional Notes: See here for additional information. For information on the current weather, check out this link.

The Shatterdome didn't look futuristic, swatches of metal and concrete transforming a portion of the harbor into five enormous bays. Nevermind that only two were currently in use. The stark greys stand out against the colorful face of the city, a hulking monolith that's been carved into the face of the city that had once upon a century been termed the Jewel of the Pacific.

Note: Players are welcome to start their own interactions outside of the three main prompted scenarios. Go wild!

Yuri had to suppress a sigh. Honestly, this kid... standing there hugging his uniform like a security blanket. Could he look any more pathetic?

Whether he could or not, Yuri would have to get used to it. He had to stop having these knee-jerk reactions every time Luke came around.

"Don't go out of your way."

"It's more about getting out of everyone else's way...?" Luke explains, absent, not exactly catching onto the attempt to be nice, though he was aware he wasn't being told off, either, which in of itself is always notable to him lately.

Anyway, he didn't really want to dwell on that, so he forces a bit of a smile and changes the subject. "So, I don't know if I should say congratulations or not. You're already a member of the PPDC, right? Did you really need to try out?"

"Yes," he says, keeping his voice casual. "Same for all transfers, everyone starts on the same level."

It had been explained to him with a lot more yelling and in a much less positive right: this was basically a demotion, and Yuri was probably the first cadet in PPDC history to ever get one. But it was a lot better than being kicked out.

"Everyone?" Luke felt like that couldn't be right. He'd seen a hand full of actual pilots since he got here, no way people like Andrea Martin and Raleigh Beckett were counted among those. "What about the rangers?"

"Good question," he said honestly. "I've asked, but nobody's given me a straight answer." About that, or if the pilots would be trying to drift with new people. The hush-hush as just making him more and more curious.

"Seriously?" That was pretty surprising. He'd expect there would be a clear answer on that, it was the sort of question he expected to produce a laugh. That pilots were partners, with a bond glorified in the same way people talked about True Friendship or True Love, it was hard to imagine asking pilots who'd already found that to go looking for another partner.

Sounded awkward, too. Still... "It's hard to imagine but..." Pilots did die. Fairly frequently, actually. "I guess it wouldn't be a bad thing... if they could drift with more than one person?"

"Probably not," Yuri said, though he gave Luke an arch look. "But would you want more than one person knowing everything that goes on inside your head? Especially if one of those people was a stranger."

Luke finds himself a little surprised at Yuri's response. He honestly hadn't considered it. "It's not that I want to share that much or not, but... I don't think I can really afford to worry about that?"

Anyway, so much of his life had already been dragged out in front of the public. The idea of someone knowing what he really felt and really was like was almost... a relief. At least then if they hated him it would be him. "If I could actually be compatible with two people that'd be really lucky."

Somehow, Luke always managed to say something to slightly unexpected and slightly grating. Must be nice to live so carefree and guiltless as a naive, pampered rich kid. He held back a grimace under the guise of stowing his bag of hair ties in his foot locker, trying to quash the feeling. Yuri had made his own choices; he didn't have the right to be bitter over someone else's life.

"Careful, talk like that and people are going to think your head is empty," he said dryly.

"People think that anyway." Luke shot back automatically, with maybe a cranky grumble but no actual heat.

He half turned away, not catching onto Yuri's mood, instead glancing around the barracks for a likely place to sleep. It looks like corners were popular and most had already been taken.
