[ open ] Welcome to Chile, Cadets.

Characters: ALL.
Location: Valparaíso Shatterdome, Chile.
Date/Time: February 15th-28th.
Summary: The first shipment of recruits into the new Jaeger Academy program arrive. Some are staggered throughout the month, but they all have the same basic greeting. Here you are, there's where you sleep, here's what you wear, get going.
Additional Notes: See here for additional information. For information on the current weather, check out this link.

The Shatterdome didn't look futuristic, swatches of metal and concrete transforming a portion of the harbor into five enormous bays. Nevermind that only two were currently in use. The stark greys stand out against the colorful face of the city, a hulking monolith that's been carved into the face of the city that had once upon a century been termed the Jewel of the Pacific.

Note: Players are welcome to start their own interactions outside of the three main prompted scenarios. Go wild!

She walks into the fighting room next. She's not that interested in the Jaegers. You've seen one giant robot, you've seen them all. She'll figure them out eventually. She's more interested in their physical training facilities. She's even more interested in the possibility of finding replacements for her confiscated properties.

Franzisca runs her hand through the weapon racks. Great. There's nothing but wooden sticks of varying sizes here: sticks the size of crowbars, sticks vaguely shaped like swords and sticks that are taller than her. There wasn't anything she could use to whip with, much less crop fence with.

But maybe this other cadet has a better idea on what's in here. wouldn't hurt to ask.

"You there. Have you seen a whip around here?"

Sugane nearly jumps out of his skin, but at least he doesn't scream. Sure, he startles and sets and entire rack of sticks shaking, but he didn't scream so at least his pride is somewhat intact.

"A whip?" He pronounces the word carefully, though it still comes out as three syllables. "I don't know what you mean." It's not a word he recognizes. It must not be something that's in the phrasebook he tried his best to memorized. The girl seems to be another trainee, so it can't be a personal item she's lost since they've turned those in already. That means it's either something that you could find in this room or a person's name that he's mistaking. English is difficult...

Great. Twitchy and with a strong, Asian accent. Why didn't they make sure that the cadets could speak proper English before they allowed them in? Or maybe German. After all, they invented the Jaegers.

"A whip." Short, sharp, shouldn't take more than one syllable to say. She picks up one of the shorter sticks and tries to go through the motions of an overhead whip crack. But it's just not the same without the sound.
bushidork: (really?)

When are people going to understand that just repeating the same word that someone didn't understand the first time isn't going to make them understand it any better? Sugane frowns and crosses his arms. Either she's threatening him or that's supposed to be some sort of demonstration, either way it's not doing much good.

"A weapon?" That's his next attempt at figuring this out. Maybe he's just not hearing the second syllable or it's some sort of abbreviation he's not familiar with.

"More than just a weapon, a tool for justice," and something to hit horses with. But he didn't need to know that, did he?

"It's a stick with a long, leather rope on the tip." She waves an arm in front of the stick to simulate a rope. It feels like she sunk so low if she had to explain what such a simple, every day item was. Oh the things she would do for her comfort sport.
bushidork: (do not want)

"Ah!" When she actually makes the effort to explain what she means instead of just repeating it, he's able to figure out what she's talking about. He's not exactly sure what the "tool for justice" part is about, though, and he's no sure he wants to know.

"I have not seen anything like that. There are only sticks." And a good thing, too, because the point isn't to hurt anyone too seriously during training sessions. He can't think of a way you could fight someone with a whip and not cause damage.

Just sticks? There's no justice in just sticks, even if one could probably make a clever pun over it. But if someone did, and Franziska had a whip with her, that someone would get very hurt.

"How can we have a versatile fighting style when all we have are sticks?" There aren't even any bows? Slings? Axes? Even practice ones will do. "You can't defeat every kaiju with sticks. Do they at least have fencing--" she almost said sticks "epees?"

Sugane visibly brightens at that. Finally, a question he can sort of answer! He didn't exactly catch every word, but he does certainly know something about sword fighting. He finds a stick on a rack nearby that's not too different in size or weight than a wooden practice sword and holds it out. It may not be quite what she's looking for, but it's enough to train with.

"You can use this! It is like what we practice kendo with. Do you know about kendo? Japanese sword fighting?"

She sighs as she takes the stick from him. Did he even get what she said? This is a lot bigger than what she was looking for, but how can she deny him when he suddenly stopped being twitchy?

"I know what kendo is," and it's not something she was ever interested in. It was a sport with no finesse. "Why? Are you looking for someone to train with?"

"Yes! I will train alone, but it is good to work together." He nods emphatically at that. He prefers training solo, actually, because it's easier to focus, but years of kendo club at school have gotten him used to working with others. There's definitely some advantage in it, especially in a situation like this where there are other disciplines he can learn from.

"I train very much at home."
